Why did Matisse use fabrics in his paintings?

matisse used many fabrics in his paintings but im not sure why. I heard it was something to do with his mother.
its for a GCSE art project and so any answers will be aprecuated!

    I think he considered it to be a good idea, so he did it. No special meaning.

    i’m not sure how the issue is related to his mother, but he probably did it to improve the appearance of the portrait and to alter the surface quality of his artwork through the sense of touch.
    Example: If you glue sand paper on a canvas, paint oranges on it and touch it after it dries, it would feel exactly like the surface of an orange.
