How do you remove fabric from a painted surface?

Fabric processing
Lori Z asked:

I bought a home and am in the process of adding my own touches. However, I have found that the room I am working on has an issue. The former owner cut out fabric and glued (?) it to the closet doors. The doors are painted and I’m afraid that if I pull the fabric off, the paint will be pulled and ruin the closet doors. It doesn’t look like I can paint over it without still seeing the outline of the pattern. Does anyone have any ideas how to get the fabric off without ruining the doors?

You may have to sand off the fabric and then repaint the doors. If they aren’t raised panels, this would be your least expensive and damaging option. I would use a belt sander for speed. You can try using adhesive remover to lift the glue from behind the fabric, but that might damage the wood because most of the time it is used to remove carpet and vinyl adhesives from concrete. Any way you attempt to remove the fabric, you will have to refinish the doors but that will be cheaper than replacing them. Check to see whether the previous own used liquid starch to adhere the fabric. If they did, it will peel off and you will only have to wash the doors. See whether you can get a putty knife behind the fabric and mist with water as you pull, that removes fabric that has been adhered with liquid starch.
